$2 million bridge boost for Melbourne cyclists

4 March 2010

A new Parkville bridge is helping create safer journeys for the hundreds of pedestrians and cyclists that use the popular Capital City Trail each day.

Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas and Member for Melbourne Bronwyn Pike today officially opened the new bridge over Manningham Street.

Mr Pallas said the bridge was a fantastic addition to the already well populated Capital City Trail, improving cyclist and pedestrian safety by separating them cars along Manningham Street in Parkville.

"The Brumby Labor Government is building a better transport system and we understand how important cycling and walking is as a sustainable and accessible travel option," Mr Pallas said.

"This new grade separated crossing point on Manningham Street will significantly improve cyclist and pedestrian safety and provide an important link along the existing Capital City Trail."

Mr Pallas said the Brumby Labor Government had provided more than $2 million to fund the project as part of its commitment to establish walking and cycling as a viable transport option for all Victorians.

"This new bridge will not only benefit existing users of this popular local trail but also help to encourage more people to walk and cycle for transport in inner Melbourne," he said.

"Most local trips range from two to five kilometres, which is an easy distance to walk or cycle. Yet most people are using their cars for these short trips, contributing greatly to road congestion and pollution."

Ms Pike said the new bridge was another significant step forward in improving pedestrian and cycling links in inner Melbourne.

"This wonderful new bridge will not only remove any potential conflict with cars but will also add another link in the continuous pedestrian and cycling network around the inner metropolitan area," Ms Pike said.

"This is a great boost for Melbourne pedestrians and cyclists, who will experience less disruption to their journey as they will no long have to stop at Manningham Street and give-way to cars.

"They can now safely and easily access popular local areas such as Yarra Bend Park, Burnley Gardens, the Yarra River, Docklands, Moonee Ponds Creek and Royal Park."

The Brumby Labor Government has committed $115 million to continue to improve cycling infrastructure through the Victorian Cycling Strategy, highlighted in the $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan.

The strategy, launched last year, includes new bicycle lanes and shared walking and cycling paths on priority routes and a $5 million public bike hire system for Melbourne's CBD.
